About ramblingdon

As a Storyteller from the South, it was only natural that I turned to writing about the many fantastic things I have seen and experienced in my decades traveling in my RV. I love to write about what I see, with my favorite being; interesting and amazing places. Tiki Bars with character, Beautiful Sunsets as well as Interesting People and Great Conversations. I am a decent photographer, a terrible investor, and a good friend at those who get to know me. I have written and published a number of books on Amazon!

Not That Scared!

I read this Somewhere, Long Ago and I thought it was funny at th time. Looking at it now, maybe it isn’t that funny when you think about it!

One Day an old Man came into A sleazy bar and sat down, by chance near the pool tables. There were four young men who looked like they are in their twenties, and they were shooting pool and making a lot of noise. They were wearing the customary leather motorcycle club jackets and they were obviously very drunk.

The bartender came over to the old man and told him; Sir, these boys are trouble-makers and I recommend that you move down to the other end of the bar.The old man looked over at the drunker men, and then he turned back to the bartender and said; Thank You young man, but I’m comfortable right here. The bartender just shook his head and walked away, leaving the old man to whatever Fate had in store for him.

But, as luck would have it, one of the drunken men saw the bartender talking to the old man and after whispering to his buddies, they all dropped their pool cues on the table and then they walked over and surrounded the old man.

The shortest one said; So old man, you and the bartender got a problem with us shooting pool and enjoying a few beers?

With this, he reached over and flipped the hat on the old man’s head, off and across the bar. The old man slowly turned to look into the eyes of the young punk and as he did so, the punk opened his jacket showing off a very large Bowie style knife holstered on his waist.

A this point the punk sneered at the old man and told him; In fact, I think I’ll just cut your old ass up a little, just for entertainment. The old man kept his eyes locked on those of the young punk as he reached down and gripped the handle of the knife.

At the same time, the old man reached into is jacket and pulled out a sweet little nine millimeter pistol and laid it onto the bar next to his beer. Then he smiled at the surprised punk. The punk started to pull his knie when one of his buddies reached over and stopped him. Then this second biker turned to the old man and asked him;

Are you crazy? My buddy here is ready to cut you up. And I can guarantee you one thing, If I let go of his arm, he’ll mess you up real bad. The old man glanced into the mirror behind the bar and saw that all four of the bikers were smiling to each other, but he just reached for his beer and took a long draft of it.

He saw that the bartender was holding a baseball bat and trying to sneak down the bar to where they were all standing. The silence grew longer and the older biker asked the old man;

Aren’t you scared that we will kill you where you sit?

The old man looked at the four punks as they waited for him to cower in fear and beg for his life. INstead he slowly laid his hand on the grip of his pistol and told the three punks; Well boys, I am 79 years old, and a life sentence for killing you four is not nearly as scary to me as it should be for any of you that survive what is about to happen.

When he finished talking, the smiles fell from the four punks lips and all of their eyes went to the pistol lying next to the half finished beer. Two of them took a couple of steps back and away from the old man. The one with the knife had a look on his face that said he was just a blowhard, and the third man?

Well, he slowly let go of the other punks arm, and talking loudly, to no one in particular, he said with a nervous tick in his voice; OK Boys, were late, so let’s give this gentleman some roon to enjoy his beer.

As they walked towards the door, one of the punks yelled back to the old man; Army?

The old man never took his eyes off of the mirror and responded; No, Marines!

The four punks picked up their pace and were quickly gone from the bar. The old man put his pistol away inside his jacket, and took a long sip of his beer, while the bartender walked over and drew another draft for the old man.

He set the beer down in form of him and asked the old man; Dude, How did you know they would back off like that?

The old man smiled at the bartender and said; Punks like those usually run in packs and generally speaking if you show them your teeth they will back off. The bartender laughed and said; Yeah, but what if they still come at you?

The old man started on his second beer and laughed out loud saying; I wasn’t lying; I’m 79 years old, I have lung cancer, and I’m really not worried about any kind of prison sentence the justice system may give me.

The Moral Here?

FEAR RIDES ON TOP OF HOPE!

So, NEVER MESS WITH A MAN WITHOUT HOPE!

DON’s WORLD – Don’t “F” with my Font!

I use WordPress for this, my personal website. Or, is it a Blog? The lines between these are so blurred anymore.

Anyway, I’ve used WordPress for years now, so when hey started forcing everyone over to teir new BLOCK editor, I just capitulated and told myself, that it would be OK. I would just spend a few hours re-educating myself and move on with my writings.

Well, It looks like WP has other thoughts.

You see, If I like a certain FONT or Font size then I’ll probably be using it for a long time before I see a need for change. WP though, has decided that they will force-feed me these blocks, with their selected Fonts and Font formats, with every block I use!!!

Well, WP, your selected font is not what I want, and your decision that every letter will be a dull, almost invisible GRAY color? What the Hell is with this. Are you saving mone storing le pixels per letter, or something?

Well, I’ll use your Block editor, OM? But You are starting to push me to ask myself why I don’t take my five sites, and my hundreds of articles somewhere else.

You see, there’s something that you and your corporate mind hasn’t grasped.

I am a Writer, For better or worse, I am Writer. And, ust like Hemingway who had his trusty favorite typewriter, I ave my favorite FONTS sentence structures, and paragraph formats and such that supports my writing, and allows me the freedom to do it my way.

You, on the other hand want me to constantly deal with your “BLOCKS”. Well, it’s not good for me to spend sch a large portion of my writing time bouncing around in your BLOCKS on formatting, and not on my writing.

I implore you, fid this or else!

ENOUGH is ENOUGH!

Somehow the racial injustice we all witnessed when the policemen in Minneapolis slowly took the breath away from a Black man named George Floyd sparked a worldwide reaction. But after several weeks the, at first, peaceful days of protest quickly turned into weeks of rioting and rampant destruction of public property.

Here is a link to my article that discusses how thee riots are actually harming the cause of the Blacks. my thought is that once a point has been made to the existing government, the next step should be negotiations for improvements, and not continual day-after-day destruction and chaos.Chaos breeds over-reaction, at some point, and not understanding and growth.

Health Supplements and Insurance Companies

DON’s WORLDThe question here is why can’t we Seniors get our Insurance companies to pay something on the many Health Supplements we end up using to save money?

Many of the Health Supplements that are sold over the counter today are actually formally produced copies of “old Home Remedies? And, these supplemental medications work very well.

DON’s WORLD – Who Are We FLORIDIANS?

DON’s World – 200710 – WHO ARE WE in FLORIDA

Florida is an interesting State and as everyone knows it is a favorite spot for retired people to move to and enjoy the latter years of their lives. Of course we also have an image of being a state that is nothing but Beaches, Swimming Pools and Tiki Bars.

One reality that many people, not familiar with, this semi-tropical state is the fact that over 25% of the state’s population is Hispanic speaking according to the most recent Census. I’ve been living here for over ten years now myself and even I can see a slow change in the cultural lifestyle as these hard working people grow and participate in our government as American citizens.

Here is a link to my article that discusses the latest census data and what I have personally observed of how our nation has changed many things to aid all of the ethnic groups who are migrating here.

CoVid-19 and being a Three Time Loser

I actually hope this article will become “Old News” very quickly.

I call myself a 3-time Loser, not because I have a history of criminal convictions, but rather because I have a number of Health Issues that make me more susceptible to catching colds, the latest Flu, and other infectious diseases. And, to top these problems off, I am in my Seventies.

From what i see on the news channels, I am one of the people that is considered a very high risk of becoming infected with this CoVid-19 virus and not only catch it, but my probability of dying from it are very high.

I wrote an article on my Writer’s site that goes into more detail on tis and if you click on the link below, you will have a clearer understanding of my predicament and what i am doing to increase my odds of not catching it.

Relatives, Sorting Them Out

It’s the Rare person who has Relatives who are all shining examples of the greatness of humanity.

In my Youth, I had so many relatives around me that I believed such constant appearances of mine at our home was the norm for everyone.

Eventually, I learned that I was living a life of exception, and that the majority of the other families I knew of had what I would now call a smaller “clan” to observe and learn from.

So, my feeling that my family was exceptionally large was mostly because we were exceptional.

You see, both my Mother and my Father had so many siblings, who themselves married and had children over that post-war decade or so that my “clan” gave me so many variations in personality and personal philosophies to watch and learn from.

One of the first things you would notice about my family was that on any Sunday, and often any Saturday, there would be four, five, or maybe more of my relatives visiting us.

Sometimes it might be an Uncle or an Aunt who would just stop by to get Mom’s or Dad’s help dealing with something  that required their help or often just a little advice.

Other times it was just a casual stopover at our place to socialize. This was most common with the men. Dadf had an “open door, cold beer” policy whenever any of them stopped by. Dad might be in the middle of something he was working on in his shop, but regardless of who stopped by, the work stopped and he would hand the other person a beer and thy would walk out ext to the pond and sit and talk.

My relatives, especially the uncles and aunts varied so much in what they did during the war and how it affected them that I could write a book on their experiences. I have often called myself a Storyteller over my lifetime and looking back, this was most likely because I would sit quietly and listened to them tell so many stories of their experiences.

Their stories covered the spectrum of wartime realities and experiences, I guess; some were scary, some were heart breaking, some made you cry and some made you laugh until tears rolled from your eyes. All were exceptional to me and I carry them still, in my heart.

I had a relative who was extremely religious before the war and you couldn’t drag him into a church, any church, when he came home.  And I had relatives who could curse a blue streak at a moment’s notice if provoked who came back demanding that no one say a curse word in front of him.

I had relatives who would give you the shirt off of their backs and I had one relative who would steal anything that wasn’t tied down when he visited.

I had relatives who served in every branch of the service; on a Navy Cruiser, on a Sub-Chaser out of San Diego (my Dad), My favorite uncle was in the Marine corp and landed on two Pacific islands. They found him sitting in a bomb crater talking to his friend. His friend was sitting beside him, but his head was missing.

As I said, these relatives of mine were working class people who had seen and shared things most of us cannot imagine, and I grew up surrounded by them, and listening to them. And all of these war hardened men and women were just trying to get or hold a job, raise a family and pretend they didn’t know what they knew; hadn’t seen what they had seen, hadn’t done what they had done.

That’s where I grew up; with these relatives of mine.

But Sundays? Mom cooked on Sunday. She always got up early, cooked most of the food and then she went to church; often dragging myself and my siblings along with her. Yeah, I was raised going to church; every Sunday morning and sometimes on Sunday evening and even on Wednesdays.

There were no gourmet dishes on Mom’s table, it was always simple fare.

By 1:00pm every sunday, there would always be; fried chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans, sliced tomatoes on a bed of lettuce and canned biscuits; along with fresh milk, Buttermilk )(dad’s favorite) and sweet tea for everyone else. The meal was always the same and if anyone was visiting at that time of the day they were always welcome to eat with us. Always!

But I grew up! I didn’t watch it happen, it just did. I got taller, I graduated High School and i went into the Navy myself. There was no master plan, I did what my dad did and I went away for a few years. i was assigned to an aircraft carrier and i traveled the world, chasing women of every color, fighting and gambling with men of many different nationalities, and I stared at so many of mankind’s monuments to itself. I didn’t know ti was happening, but I grew up over those years.

The strange and to me sad thing that happened though was that all of my relatives grew older. They had jobs when I left home and when I came back, they had careers. Overall, I can say that they had fought their demons and came out victorious, for the most part. And their perspective of me? I was no longer the kid who would sit for hours and listen to them tell their war stories; I was now a grown man who it seemed at time were embarrassed to tell a story to. They ahd built their own walls and the lived behind them in safety.

Anyway, these are just a couple of my best memories of a few of my relatives. They were strong honest people who always treated me as if there was something special about me and I’ll always be grateful to them for that.

Now, after almost three-quarters of a century, living my life, with my wife by my side, these great and unique people are all gone. All I have left of these great relatives of mine are my; funny, insane, loving, hateful, crazy, sad, wonderful memories.
