Thoughts from Songs – Different Drum

tn_DeadendI listen to a lot of my old MP3’s as I go through my days as a Retiree. And, unlike some of what I now hear being played on some systems and sites, I prefer songs that are poetic. By that I mean; the words mean something and usually they rhyme.

So, here is what the song Different Drum originally written and sung by Michael Nesmith.

My favorite lyrics are;

You and I travel to the beat of a diff’rent drum.

…..

Oh, don’t get me wrong. It’s not that I’m knockin’.
It’s just that I’m not in the market
For a girl who wants to love only me.
Yes, and I ain’t sayin’ you ain’t pretty.
All I’m sayin’s I’m not ready for any person,
Place or thing to try and pull the reins in on me.

There are more lyrics to this great song, but these are the ones that my brain still retains, even to this day. A number of other artists also recorded this classic, but it’s not the great artists renditions that move me, but rather that iconic first line;

You and I travel to the beat of a diff’rent drum.

These simple lyrics say something to me each time I listen to them, and I’ll use them to generate a comment on something I see going on in our country.

My Thought:

Why have we changed from a nation of Diversity to one of Confrontation?

Let me explain; From the time of our Independence as a nation, we Americans were Rich and we were a Diverse collection of races, religions, and political ideals.

We were rich, not in monetary terms, but in land.

America had accumulated, from its infancy, vast amounts of land that needed to be settled and tamed that we accepted anyone who wanted to come here from anywhere in the world and then settle on a piece of America.

They could turn their land into a home and live their lives without any interference from others.

And as people came to America, we became a nation of very diverse views on just what the words in our nation’s Constitution really meant.

And our diversity drove us to a Civil War. There’s no need for me, a common citizen to speak on the politics of this tragic war, other than to say that, the people of America had split into two intractable, unmoveable political groups that were so polarized from each other’s views that the leaders of each group were beyond continued conversations and compromises.

This my friends is historically, how Wars start. And it did. It really doesn’t matter, from my perspective, who was wrong or who was right on which point. The lines had been drawn and a War resulted.

You can pretty much pick a major War and make the same conclusions; people formed into opposition groups who could, or would, not negotiate or compromise and a War was the result.

I know, mine is a simplistic view, but then I’m no politician, just a simple man with a simplistic view of politics.

So, back to my song and the key words that I love to hum under my breath when I turn on the local or national news.

You and I travel to the beat of a diff’rent drum.

You see, I am old enough to have seen enough, and opinionated enough myself to know that we, the people of America, will never totally agree on pretty much any issue before us as a nation.

But if we can keep the lies and deceits out of the negotiations, we can I believe, come up with compromises that when looked at over time, will hopefully show a movement towards our nation being a better place for ALL of its citizens!

Yeah, I like this old song, and I enjoy singing it often these days as I go through my life just watching as we and our drummers end up marching together.

Political Rant – Pre-Existing Conditions not covered?

Every now and then I have to go into one of my Rants about the callous stupidity of our nations politicians.

This is one of those rants about these heartless and cruel politicians and their attempt at splitting people with Pre-Existing Medical Conditions away from the rest of the population, essentially condemning them to eventual poverty and becoming second class citizens, with health problems that will often lead to the depletion of any saving they have or worse, their deaths.

A Passing Thing, Sad to Say!

Oh, LOOK!

Over there!

What  strange group of people!

Look at them, such a strange and mixed bag of Humanity.

They’re just standing there,

staring at that old memorial with the nasty soldier statue.

How strange!

Oh look, they removed their hats,

and placed their hands over their Hearts.

And now they are repeating some strange words that they all seem to know.

How embarrassing, don’t you think?

What’s that?

They call themselves Patriots?

And they are repeating the National Anthem?

Oh, and you say this day is actually a national holiday?

Set aside to honor our men and women who served in our military?

Oh my!

Well, Come along kids,

I don’t want you to get too close to such a bunch of radicals.

Besides, we’re late getting to the sale at the department store.

You don’t know me, I’m one of those who voted for Trump

Yeah, here I am, one of those Average Americans that came out of the woodwork to vote for Trump. (Or, was it to vote against Clinton?).

Anyway, I was up late, watching this very important election and finally the results turned and started going in Trump’s direction, and I must say, the consternation and shock on the faces of the whole world of journalists was, honestly, entertaining.

I got to watch the final end of the thousands of repeated and twisted ads fired at Trump and his supporters.

Anyway, i wrote a pretty good article where I attempted to explain to these opinionated news-mongers, just who I am. I am, simply put, a veteran and a common man who worked his whole life without any superlatives that the liberal press would be interested in exploring.

Me? I am just an Average American, who was finally able to symbolically  “spit in the face” of those who have ignored the plight of us, the Average American over the past decade.

News Media and the standard BS

I was just wondering.

You see, today I was watching a news network on my TV, you know which one.

It’s the one with over 75% (which seems like 90% after all these months) of their 24-hour coverage being about the Republican candidate for president and what he slips up and said to people 10, 20 and more years ago.

In most states, some of these things they beat to death are older than the statutes of limitations on such crimes as Murder, Rape, Assault, and other true criminal abuses.

But thes disconnected fools go on and on, filling their air time with digital nothings that in a few week will not even rate being stored for posterity.

So, today I made a point of switching back to this network at least hourly all day long and into the evening.

The News Media and a Jaded America.

Here’s my question. Jus How the Hell did we get to this place where we, the American Public, became so Jaded.

We trust no one! NO ONE!

Accept it, you’re just like me, we don’t believe anything that anyone says, especially the media, or as a result of the twisted news shows, even a Presidential Candidate.

The major media machines have spent so much of their resources  attempting to debunk every word from every candidate, as well as everyone who supports them that we, the people, scoff at everything we see on our TV or Smartphone.

Congratulations CNN, etal, you have done it. You have taken investigative journalism from true journalism, right through common sense commentary all the way over to the point of “giant Killer”. I’m not just picking on you CNN, I did say etal. Perhaps you should look it up.

Admit it, you really don’t care about the truth anymore, only the sensational ound-bite.

Come on, you prove it every day, YOU DON’T CARE!

You know, I remember the day when, in a newspaper or magazine, if a person’s words were quoted they were captured within two quote marks, and looked at by the world as being sacrosanct.

And, if parts of the quote were ever eliminated, there was this little string of dots “…..” that signified a part of the quote was left out.

Today, in our world of instant video presentations, I guess the media doesn’t know how to verbally insert those little dots.

They once meant so much to any educated reader. They said that this is only a piece of the original words, and we have shortened it here, for one reason or another.

Now though, a politician or a supporter can go to a small town for a meeting with voters, and talk for an hour or so.

But in this world of ours today, the media can set up a camera and record the whole conversation and then instantly scan it for a collection of words spoken that they can then present to America.

Typically, the presented words were taken totally out of context and reassembled to present to us, the public, simply “for affect”.

In other words, they do not reflect the actual meaning of that hour of back and forth talks with numerous questions and answers, but rather they are reassembled (or used for “sound bites”) that can then be used to “attack” the candidate.

Oh, and of course, this happens to both presidential candidates. Any slip of the tongue is fodder for a “news flash” across the TV screens of Americans.

In my opinion, it’s really a form of “truth rape” and we, the public have become so used to it, so jaded by it, that we just shrug our shoulders at pretty much anything the news media says to us anymore.

So, I watch as any honest but loose-lipped candidates sit with me, on the sidelines, watching this new form if entertainment. Should in the vein of the old game shows of the fifties and sixties, should I call it “Dare to tell the Truth” entertainment?

Jaded but still watching,

Presidential Primary Process, entertainment for the masses?

I don’t know if this is going to be one of my rants or not, so here goes.

You all know that we are a number of months into the craziest and strangest presidential primary process ever seen in the history of American Politics.

If you don’t know what’s going on right now then you truly qualify as being “OFF THE GRID”.In fact you have to be so far off the Grid that I wonder why I’m thinking about you at all. You obviously do not receive any communications, at all from the rest of the country.

It doesn’t take much for me to strike verbally at our existing government flunkies. That has to be obvious from so many things; but particularly from my attitude and disappointment with our leadership in Washington.

Politicians should be changed like diapers – plus a joke.

Frog_01-1

Our politicians today are a privileged group of self-serving individuals that would not hesitate to sell anyone down the river to get what they want.

One of the problems we have today is the fact that the two political parties have polarized themselves so far to the two extremes of ideology (liberal and conservative) that they have become ineffective and basically in need of being replaced by people who believe in the goals of our original government; to serve the people, and not just themselves.

I live in Florida, so where did the Sun go?

I have to say it!

I live in Florida, dammit!  And when I’m not bathed in sunshine every day, I start to worry.

It’s why we all live here, on this long finger of land, really. Oh, you can come up with any of a long list of the advantages of living in Florida, but in reality, we’re here for the Sunshine.

We worked for decades, in cold weather, in office buildings, in factories, always IN somewhere, saving our money for the chance to get the Heck away from the crappy weather further North.

OK, OK, there are a certain number of you that act like you enjoy sliding, out of control, down a snow and ice covered mountainside.

TRUMP? What an Ass! But, right now he’s my favorite Ass!

Frog_01-1

Yeah, I watched the great CNN managed (prejudiced?) Republican debate on TV.

And, honestly? I loved it.

You might wonder why I, an avowed Independent voter my whole life, would spend several hours of his time watching such a circus.

By independent, I mean, although I have voted religiously, in every election, I have never voted FOR anyone, sad to say.

Rather, I have always been forced to vote AGAINST the worst of the two candidates available to me.

Well, I watched this circus because, I got to see the Republican candidates dancing on their “PAC-puppet” strings, almost in fear it seemed at times, over what a big-mouth rich man might say about, or to, them.

I love it that the news journalists on all of the major networks, are stirring in their own indignant juices over this Donald Trump and his frank and sometimes troubling opinions.

And I love that they keep asking; Why do so many people like him?

Congressional Idiots, Minority Factions harming the Majority

I just have to write this.

Over the past few years, our Congressional representatives have slipped into their jobs, like rats slipping onto a ship. And once there, they “peel off their false robes” that showed them as patrons of the people, and shown their true colors.
